Leh, Oct.2: Army’s Fire and Fury Corps held a historic occasion at Leh Garrison on Saturday, where R.K. Mathur, LG of Ladakh, unfurled a massive national flag on a peak overlooking the Leh valley.
The big ceremony commemorated the 152nd birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, which marked the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence.
“The flag which was unfurled is the largest hand woven and hand spun cotton Khadi Flag ever manufactured in India, measuring 225 ft by 150 ft and weighing 1,000 kg. It is made by Khadi Dyers and Printers based in Mumbai which is affiliated to Khadi Village and Industries Commission.” the army said.

The Sura-Soi Engineer Regiment was tasked with transporting the national flag from Mumbai to Leh, as well as the difficult duty of installing it at the top of the steep mountains overlooking Leh for the unveiling ceremony.
A series of events were held to commemorate the historic occasion. When the flag was unveiled, the Brass Band of the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre, along with students from Ladakh Ignited Minds, performed the National Anthem. The Army Aviation Squadron’s Advanced Light Helicopters flew over the national flag and sprinkled flower petals on it.
General M.M. Naravane, Chief of the Army Staff and Lieutenant General Y.K. Joshi, GOC-in-C Northern Command also attended the event. Lieutenant General PGKA Menon, GOC, Fire and Fury Corps and senior military and civil officials were present at the ceremony.
