Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Z-Morh Tunnel on January 13 during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, marking his first trip to the region since the Assembly elections. This milestone project on the Srinagar-Sonamarg road promises to revolutionize connectivity and tourism in the region.
Z-Morh Tunnel: Dimensions and Features
The Z-Morh Tunnel spans 6.5 km with two lanes and boasts state-of-the-art engineering. Key features include:
•Main Tunnel: 10.8 meters long, with a horse-shoe-shaped escape tunnel measuring 7.5 meters.
•Ventilation Tunnel: D-shaped, 8.3 meters in diameter.
•Major Culverts: Two, measuring 110 meters and 270 meters.
•Small Culvert: 30 meters.
These advanced structures ensure safety and efficiency in travel through the Ganderbal district.
Why the Name Z-Morh?
The tunnel derives its name from its unique Z-shaped structure. The term “Morh” translates to “turn” in Hindi, symbolizing its distinctive alignment.
All-Weather Connectivity for Sonamarg
The Z-Morh Tunnel addresses the challenges of avalanche-prone roads, providing all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg. Travel time within the tunnel is reduced to approximately 15 minutes, a significant improvement over hours of travel on the previous route.
Together with the adjacent Zoji-La Tunnel, currently under construction, the Z-Morh Tunnel will connect vital locations like Baltal (Amarnath cave), Kargil, and Ladakh throughout the year.
Strategic and Economic Significance
Located on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, the Z-Morh Tunnel is strategically vital for defence logistics and the movement of goods to Ladakh. During winter, excessive snowfall renders the Zojila Pass inaccessible, disrupting connectivity. This tunnel ensures year-round access, boosting the region’s economic and social development.
Challenges and Security Concerns
The project has faced significant challenges, including an attack on workers at the construction site on October 20, 2024, by terrorists. The assault at Gagangir resulted in the tragic deaths of seven civilians, including six non-local workers and a local doctor.
A Transformative Project for Jammu and Kashmir
Built at a cost of ₹2,680 crore, the Z-Morh Tunnel is not just an engineering marvel but a game-changer for the region’s connectivity and tourism. It aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of enhancing infrastructure and fostering economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
