Mumbai, June 9: An appeal by former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh and minority affairs minister Nawab Malik for one-day bail to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on Friday, was dismissed by a special court in Mumbai on Thursday.

Notably, Deshmukh was arrested in November of last year in connection with a corruption case, while Malik was nabbed in connection with a money laundering case involving fugitive mobster Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and some of his close friends.

The Enforcement Directorate had opposed both NCP leaders’ bail applications, claiming that prisoners do not have voting rights under the Representation of the People Act, and that a person incarcerated in prison cannot vote in any elections, regardless of whether he is serving a sentence or is awaiting trial.

Anil Deshmukh is the main accused in the money laundering case filed against him, according to the central investigate agency. According to the ED, Deshmukh allegedly took advantage of his position as home minister by collecting 4.70 crore from several Mumbai bars through the help of some police personnel.
