Patna, Jan 4: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) was given the investigation into the Saran hooch catastrophe on Tuesday, according to the police.

Between December 13 and December 14, more than 70 people allegedly ingested fake alcohol in the Saran district before passing away. However, according to government statistics, the hooch catastrophe claimed the lives of 42 people.

“The prohibition unit under CID will inquiry into the hooch tragedy,” said police headquarters, additional director general (ADG) G S Gangwar.

Meanwhile, a petition for an impartial and SIT investigation into the Saran hooch catastrophe was accepted for hearing by the Supreme Court on January 9. Aryavarta Mahasabha Foundation, through attorney Pawan Prakash Pathak, filed a lawsuit to have a national action plan created to stop the production, distribution, and sale of illegal alcohol.

The PIL further demanded that the state government appropriately compensate the relatives of the victims since by doing nothing, the rights of the populace have been violated and put in danger.

Five persons have been detained thus far, including Rajesh Singh, alias Doctor, who is the main suspect.
