New Delhi: Violent clashes between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border have continued unabated since Thursday, with at least 27 fatalities reported so far and hundreds forced to flee. Cambodian officials confirmed 15 deaths on their side, while Thailand’s health ministry said 12 Thai citizens had also lost their lives in the ongoing conflict.
Indian Embassy Issues Safety Advisory for Nationals
Amid rising tensions, the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh has issued an urgent advisory, urging Indian nationals to avoid border regions and remain vigilant until the situation stabilizes. Emergency contact details have been provided for those requiring assistance. Indian citizens can reach out via phone at +855 92881676 or email at cons.phnompenh@mea.gov.in.
The embassy further advised Indians already present in affected areas to monitor local news and official updates before making any travel plans and to contact the embassy if they require support.
Ancient Shiva Temple at Heart of Conflict
At the core of the territorial dispute is the ancient Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, a 12th-century Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located along the Dangrek mountain range, the temple complex includes two other religious structures — Prasat Ta Muen and Prasat Ta Muen Toch — all of which are now caught in the crossfire.
While the temple’s main entrance lies in Thailand, its structure geographically falls within Cambodian territory. A 1907 colonial-era French map placed the temple in Cambodia, but Thailand disputes the accuracy of that map.
International Ruling and Continued Dispute
In 1962, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled the temple belonged to Cambodia, a decision Thailand accepted. However, the two nations have continued to contest 4.6 square kilometers of surrounding land. In 2008, UNESCO designated the site a World Heritage monument, further inflaming tensions. Between 2008 and 2011, repeated skirmishes occurred near the temple complex.
