Marcelo Arevalo and Jelena Ostapenko clinched the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Friday, defeating the Australian pairing of Storm Hunter and Marc Polmans 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in a thrilling final held at London’s Centre Court.
Australian Pair Dominates Early, But Winners Stage Strong Comeback
Hunter and Polmans got off to a flying start, maintaining an early advantage throughout the opening stages and taking the first set 6-4. They continued their momentum into the second set, quickly securing a service break to lead 3-1. However, Ostapenko and Arevalo staged a remarkable turnaround from there, displaying excellent coordination as they won six consecutive games to claim the second set 7-5, before going on to seal victory in the decider.
Arevalo Becomes First Salvadoran Wimbledon Champion
Arevalo, a two-time French Open men’s doubles champion, became the first player from El Salvador to win a Wimbledon title. Ostapenko, meanwhile, added another accolade to her impressive Grand Slam record, which already includes the 2017 French Open singles title and the 2024 US Open women’s doubles trophy.
Arevalo Reflects on Significance of the Win
Following the victory, Arevalo said the title meant a great deal to him, adding that he hoped to inspire children in his country by showing that hard work and belief in one’s dreams can lead to major achievements in life.
