New Delhi, Dec.9: Sudha Bharadwaj, the activist implicated in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, was released on bail on Thursday after serving three years in prison.

On December 1, the Bombay High Court granted Bharadwaj default bail. She is the first among 16 activists and academicians arrested in the case to have been granted default bail.

The HC then ordered a special NIA court to determine the conditions that would be imposed on her. Bharadwaj was ordered to be released on bail on a Rs 50,000 bond by a special NIA court on Wednesday.

On Thursday afternoon, Bharadwaj stepped out of the Byculla women’s prison after completing the necessary formalities.

In August 2018, Bharadwaj was arrested under the strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The case stems from alleged provocative comments made at the Elgar Parishad conference in Shaniwarwada, Pune, on December 31, 2017, which allegedly sparked unrest the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial on the city’s outskirts, according to the police.
