New Delhi, Feb 9: Congress national secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday expressed her support for Muslim girls taking part in the Karnataka hijab protest.

“Whether it is a bikini, a ghoonghat, a pair of jeans or a hijab, it is a woman’s right to decide what she wants to wear. This right is GUARANTEED by the Indian constitution. Stop harassing women,” tweeted Priyanka Gandhi.

The Karnataka hijab debate began on January 1, when the administration of a government pre-university college in the coastal town of Udupi in Karnataka prohibited six Muslim girls from attending courses because they were wearing hijab, which was against the college’s dress code.

Hindu college students are already wearing saffron scarves and flying saffron flags, demanding the right to display their religious garb and symbols if hijab is allowed in educational institutions.

Notably, schools and colleges in Karnataka will be closed for the next three days.; Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai has appeals to the people to maintain peace and harmony. The Karnataka High Court is hearing petitions filed by five women from a government college in Udupi, questioning hijab restrictions. The hearing was started yesterday and will continue today.
