New Delhi, Nov 21: Arun Goel, a former bureaucrat, started his new job as an election commissioner on Monday. According to the poll panel, Goel assumed charge this morning.
A 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, Goel took voluntary retirement on November 18. He was selected as an election commissioner on Saturday. On December 31, 2022, he was supposed to turn 60 and retire.
He now serves on the election panel alongside Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey.
After Sushil Chandra retired from his position as CEC in May of this year, there was a vacancy in the EC.
Up until recently, Goel served as the secretary for heavy industries. Additionally, he has worked for the Union Culture ministry. His appointment comes only days before Gujarat’s two-phase election, which will take held on December 1 and 5.
