Kolkata: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has accused the Mamata Banerjee government of deliberately promoting Arabic culture in West Bengal, claiming that the state’s traditional Sanatan heritage is being weakened. His remarks have added fresh political tension in the state.
Remarks Made During New Year Event
Speaking during the launch of the Matrushakti Bharosa Card on the occasion of Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, Adhikari said the BJP is committed to protecting Bengal as the homeland of Bengali Hindus. He alleged that the ruling government is systematically undermining the cultural identity of the state.
Claims of Cultural Imposition
Adhikari further claimed that attempts are being made to impose Urdu language and customs that restrict women. He described such developments as an attack on the land associated with Swami Vivekananda and Shri Chaitanya.
He also referred to Syama Prasad Mukherjee, saying West Bengal remained part of India in 1947 due to his efforts.
Political Pledge for Future
The BJP leader said the new year should be marked with a commitment to protect Bengal’s identity and ensure the safety and dignity of women. His comments are likely to trigger strong political responses from rival parties.
