Patna, Aug 31: Bihar Law Minister Kartik Kumar, who is allegedly facing kidnapping accusations, was demoted and given the ministry of sugarcane industries on Wednesday.

In light of the current controversy surrounding Kartik Kumar’s alleged participation in a criminal case, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar transferred him to the Sugarcane Industries Ministry.

In a statement released by the state Cabinet Secretariat Department, it was announced that Shamim Ahmad, another RJD leader, had taken Kumar’s place as the law minister. Prior to his promotion, Ahmad had the portfolio for sugarcane. The appointment of RJD MLC Kartik Kumar as law minister led to criticism of the Nitish Kumar administration.

The minister Kartik Singh’s department was only switched from the law to the sugarcane ministry by Nitish Kumar, according to criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking for the BJP, Arvind Kumar Singh claimed that Nitish lacked the confidence to dismiss him from his cabinet and that the entire process was a waste of time.

His dismissal from the government had been demanded by the BJP, who claimed that an arrest warrant was out for him in connection with an abduction case from 2014. The dispute that emerged over the selection of RJD politician Kartik Kumar as the Mahagathbandhan’s law minister was another issue that the Congress had urged Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav to address.

Anant Singh, a don-turned-politician, is thought to be close friend with Kartik Kumar, who was chosen to serve on the Legislative Council in April. On the RJD slate, he won the Patna MLC election. A court issued an arrest order for him after he assumed the position of law minister due to his alleged involvement in an abduction case.

Members of the ruling Grand Alliance, the Congress and CPI-ML (Liberation), have also urged the Nitish Kumar administration to rethink its choice to appoint Kartik Kumar to the cabinet.
