New Delhi, Oct 20: Cyclone Sitrang is anticipated to form over the Bay of Bengal when a low-pressure area forms over the north Andaman sea and the surrounding areas of the south Andaman sea and southeast Bay of Bengal by October 23.
The 7.6 km above sea level cyclonic circulation would move west-northwestward by October 22 and coalesce into a depression before intensifying into a storm over the Bay of Bengal.
“A cyclonic circulation lies over north Andaman Sea and neighbourhood persisting over the same region since yesterday (18th October), and now it is extending upto mid tropospheric levels at 0830 hours IST of today, the 19th October 2022,” the Indian Meteorological Department tweeted on Wednesday.
Although the depression is likely to become well-marked and develop into a storm, neither the intensity nor the course of the system are predicted, according to IMD Director-General Mrutunjay Mohapatra.
On alert status have been several coastal districts. In light of the forecast, the Odisha government also cancelled the leaves of its employees from October 23 to October 25.
