Dumka, Oct. 26: Two persons have been trampled to death by a wild elephant who sneaked into the human habitations of Dumka district again thereby triggering panic among the residents.

One Videshi Mandal (45) of Sarsabad village under Jama block of the district was on Tuesday trampled to death by a wild elephant being separated from the herd.

Earlier another villager in Masaliya block area is reported to have been killed by the same elephant which reached deep in the outskirts of Dumka district headquarter on Tuesday morning and was spotted roaming on the main Dumka -Bhagalpur road as the traffic along either side remained stranded for nearly half an hour.

The tusker is believed to have sneaked into Dumka district from bordering Jamtara district which was spotted roaming around the residential areas and the main busy road near Maharo between Dumka and Bhagalpur thereby sparking panic among residents.

Eyewitnesses’ accounts say the elephant was being chased away by the residents of neighbouring villages when the jumbo suddenly emerged from a nearby bush and attacked him.

DFO Abhirup Sinha rushed to the spot and assured that the elephant would be driven to its conventional forest route by a team of trained personnel.

“Footprints of the elephant are being examined to ascertain whether it is the same elephant which has been wandering in Dumka and adjoining districts for the last several years and killed over one dozen persons or is another one,” the DFO said adding suitable compensation to the deceased’s family and for the loss of crops would be paid by the department.
