New Delhi, May 27: For ‘Tomb of Sand,’ Delhi-based author Geetanjali Shree and American translator Daisy Rockwell won the International Booker Prize on Thursday.
‘Tomb of Sand,’ which was originally published in Hindi, is the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious award.
“We are delighted to announce that the winner of the #2022InternationalBooker Prize is ‘Tomb of Sand’ by Geetanjali Shree, translated from Hindi to English by @shreedaisy and published by @tiltedaxispress,” The Booker Prizes tweeted.
The first novel in Hindi to be considered for the £50,000 prize. Geetanjali and Rockwell will share the award money equally.
‘Tomb of Sand’ tells the story of an 80-year-old woman who is depressed following the loss of her husband. She eventually overcomes her despair and chooses to travel to Pakistan in order to confront the history she has been avoiding since the Partition.
Shree’s work has been translated into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean, and she has three novels and various story collections to her credit.
