Ranchi, March 23: The online parcel management system at Hatia Railway Station is all set to be launched on March 25, after which tracking the parcels will become easy for the consumers who send their parcels through railways to different parts of the country.
Earlier, the consumers had to check over phone call for the status of the parcel, but now with the introduction of the parcel management system consumers will be able to get the live status of their parcels.
The Divisional Commercial Manager of Ranchi Railways, Aditya Choudhary, said that with the introduction of the parcel management system people will be able to track their parcel with the help of GPS.
“Earlier handwritten slips were placed on the parcel but now with new parcel management system a barcode will be placed on the parcel and everything will be computerised. Also, earlier if a consumer’s receipt given during the parcel is lost, then the parcel was not given to him. For this, he had to fill a bond. Whereas under this arrangement, even if the consumer’s receipt is lost, there is no need to worry, rather the consumer will get his parcel,” Choudhary said.
“Under the parcel management system, GPS-based handheld terminal will also be made available to the concerned railway personnel,” Choudhary added.
As part of the revamping of the parcel management system, the Indian Railways has extended the computerization of the system to 84 locations in Phase-I.
In the second phase, it is happening from Hatia station which will be inaugurated by General Manager of South Eastern Railways Archana Joshi.
In the third phase, the parcel management system will be introduced on Ranchi Railway Station, Jhaldia Station, Muri Station and Torang Station.
The public will now be able to book the parcels to be sent through the parcel management system up to 120 days in advance.
Under the improved system, the booking of parcels will be done at stations through computerized counters.
Customers will also be able to track their parcels through the GPRS network and they will also receive messages from the Indian Railways regarding the various stages of transit of their parcels.
The parcel management system will also include a lease module for the registration of long and short term parcel leaseholders and preparation of online manifest.
