Tirupati, Nov.20: Heavy rains have left 17 people dead and over 100 missing as they were reported being washed away by floods in Andhra Pradesh. Visuals from Tirupati temple showed hundreds of pilgrims trapped in floods.

The ghat road and walkways leading to Tirumala Hills, where the temple is located, have been closed. On the outskirts of Tirupati, the Swarnamukhi River is flooded, and the reservoirs are overflowing. Many people are said to be stranded in the floods. Three state transportation buses were stranded, while 12 others were unable to be evacuated.

National and state disaster relief teams have been dispatched to the scene, and rescue efforts are underway. Many roads have been devastated by the floods, and rail, road, and aviation traffic have all been disrupted.

The Rayalaseema region is the hardest hit. The districts of Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, and Anantpur in the state have been affected.

Since Thursday, the rains haven’t stopped, and the Cheyyuru River is overflowing. In addition, the Annamayya irrigation project has been harmed.

The airport in Kadapa will be closed until November 25.
