New Delhi, Jan 7: India on Friday supplied the third batch of medical assistance consisting of two tones of essential life-saving medicines to Afghanistan, as part of its ongoing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
The medicines were handed over to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Kabul.
“India stands committed to continue its special relationship with the people of Afghanistan and providing them humanitarian assistance,” said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Through the World Health Organization, India recently provided 500,000 doses of COVID vaccination and 1.6 tones of medical aid to Afghanistan . More humanitarian aid, including medications and food grains, would be delivered to Afghanistan in the coming weeks by India.
“In the coming weeks, we would be undertaking the supply of wheat and the remaining medical assistance. In this regard, we are in touch with UN agencies and others for finalizing the modalities for transportation,” said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.
India has reached out to Pakistan to discuss the logistics of shipping 50000 tones of wheat to Afghanistan through Pakistani border. Pakistan does not allow two-way trade between India and Afghanistan through its territory as a matter of policy. It has, however, agreed to deliver the wheat on India’s request because it is intended for Afghanistan’s besieged people.
Notably, India has supplied over 723 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine to 94 countries and two UN entities since the start of the Vaccine Maitri Programme in January last year.
In addition to this, India has supplied Covid-19 related medical and other assistance to over 150 countries since the beginning of the pandemic.
