Jharkhand: Forest dept organises workshop for preparation of rules under “PESA Act 1996”

Ranchi, Dec 14: The Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, Jharkhand on Wednesday organised a meeting in Hotel BNR with regard to the preparation of rules from the perspective of Jharkhand state under the “PESA Act 1996”.

The PESA Act i.e., Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 is a law enacted by the Government of India to ensure self-governance through traditional gram sabhas for the people living in the Scheduled Areas of India. 

L Khayangate, Additional Chief Secretary said that the Scheduled Areas are the areas identified by the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution of India. It gives special powers to the Gram Sabhas in the Scheduled Areas, especially for the management of natural resources. 

He said that the state of Jharkhand is also an important state which falls in the Scheduled Area.

Dr Sanjay Srivastava, IAF, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests-cum-Forest Force Chief, Jharkhand along with Kulwant Singh, IAF and other officials were in the workshop to give shape to the PESA Act of Jharkhand.
