Ranchi, Aug.19: The JMM today took strong exception to the release of eleven people, convicted for gang-rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members in Gujarat, on Independence Day.
Addressing a press conference, party spokesperson and general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said the remission of sentence of convicts of the murder, rape and communal violence is violation of the Supreme Court directives given on remittance.
The JMM spokesperson said the act committed on completion of 75th years of independence of India is not good and a statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is awaited on the issue as the PM used to be an institution, not a man.
Bhattacharya said this not for the first time the BJP has shown respect for the murder convict. Earlier on in 2017 Jayant Sinha, who was union minister, had welcomed those involved in mob lynching of Alumuddin after the high court granted them bail.
The JMM spokesperson alleged the BJP of playing with the sanctity of mothers and sisters of the country. He said the party has now started dealing in the sanctity of women after selling national properties.
Bhattacharya, replying to a question from the media, ruled out any threat to the Hemant Soren government in the state saying the BJP has been toppling the government since December 30, 2019 when the JMM government came into power. He said the result of four by-elections suggests that the claim of the BJP never becomes true.
Asked about an emergency meeting of the UPA amid speculation of a crisis in the government, Bhattacharya said the meeting has been convened to discuss the issue of drought in the state. On assembly speaker Rabindranath Mahto dropping his programme to go Canada to participate in a meeting, he said he did so in the interest of his constituency people facing drought.
