New Delhi, Feb 11: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear urgent petitions against the Karnataka high court’s interim judgement (the formal order has not yet been issued) prohibiting the hijab and other religious attire from being worn in the state’s schools and universities.
Chief Justice of India NV Ramana stated that the Supreme Court will intervene only when it is necessary. “Don’t spread these things to a national level. We will interfere only at an appropriate time,” said CJI.
The special leave plea filed by a student challenging the interim order issued by the Karnataka high court on Thursday was cited by senior lawyer Devadatt Kamat. “In effect, this is a complete suspension,” Kamat added.
The state government’s solicitor general stated that the Karnataka high court interim verdict order had not yet been issued, prompting attorney Kamat to request a hearing on Monday, when the Karnataka high court is also due to hear the case again.
The Karnataka high court issued an interim injunction on Thursday prohibiting students from wearing religious garments inside schools and universities, with schools and colleges reopening on February 14. The interim ruling, according to the special leave petition, has called into question people’s freedom of conscience.
