Lucknow, May 19: A court in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday has granted permission to a lawsuit demanding removal of a mosque in Mathura that is supposed to be erected on the Krishna Janmabhoomi, or birthplace of Lord Krishna.
This signifies that a court can hear the lawsuit.
The case is one of numerous filed by Hindu organisations requesting that the 17th century Shahi Idgah Masjid be removed from the Katra Keshav Dev temple, claiming that the mosque was built on Lord Krishna’s birthplace.
According to the petitions, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb ordered the Shahi Idgah mosque to be built in the Krishna Janmabhoomi in 1669-70. The case was brought by Lucknow resident Ranjana Agnihotri as the ‘next friend of the newborn Lord Krishna’ of the Katra Keshav temple.
“As worshippers of Lord Krishna we have the right to file a suit demanding restoration of his property. The mosque was wrongly built on Krishna Janmabhoomi. There was a compromise several years ago on the sharing of property, but that compromise was illegal,” said lawyer for the petitioner Gopal Khandelwal.
The complaint was previously dismissed by a civil court in Mathura, which stated that it could not be admitted under the Places of Worship Act of 1991, which preserves the religious status of any site of worship as it was on August 15, 1947. The court stated that if it was registered, a huge number of believers would be able to approach the court in various cases.
