Kannauj: In a disturbing incident in Kannauj, a 50-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a minor. The accused, Nawab Singh Yadav, was once associated with the Samajwadi Party, a connection that has sparked political tensions, with the BJP accusing the opposition party of shielding criminals.

According to the police complaint, the minor and her aunt visited Yadav on Sunday night after he promised to help the girl secure a job. While the aunt stepped away to use the washroom, Yadav allegedly undressed both himself and the girl, attempting to assault her. The aunt returned in time to intervene and immediately contacted the police.

Kannauj Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Anand confirmed the incident, stating, “At around 1:30 am, we received a call on the UP 112 service where the girl reported the attempted rape.” Police swiftly responded, finding Yadav in a state of undress, and took him into custody. He now faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The BJP quickly seized on Yadav’s past political ties, with UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi highlighting his former role as a representative for Dimple Yadav, the Samajwadi Party leader and wife of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Tripathi also referenced a similar case last month in Ayodhya, where another Samajwadi Party member, Moid Khan, was arrested for the rape of a minor.

Tripathi criticized the Samajwadi Party, alleging that it has a history of covering up such crimes, referring to a controversial statement made by party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, who once remarked, “boys will be boys.”

In response, the Samajwadi Party issued a statement distancing itself from Nawab Singh Yadav. The party clarified that Yadav had been involved in anti-party activities for the past five years and was no longer an active member. The party accused the BJP of attempting to tarnish its image through baseless allegations.

The incident has reignited political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, with both parties exchanging accusations as the investigation into the alleged crime continues.
