New Delhi, Aug 18: In the early hours of the morning, there were three fatalities in new violence in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. The victims were killed during a gunfight with armed miscreants.

Three villagers died as a result of a heavy shooting that broke out in the Thowai Kuki village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

Three people were reported missing after hearing loud gunfire coming from the area this morning, according to sources.

The villagers soon started searching and later discovered their bodies.

The deceased have been identified as Hollenson Baite (24), Thangkhokai Haokip (35), and Jamkhogin Haokip (26).

The incident is the most recent to occur in the violent state of Manipur, where ethnic confrontations erupted on May 3 following the organization of a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill districts to oppose the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe status.

Since the violence started, more than 3,000 people have been hurt while over 120 people have died.

Along with the Manipur Police, over 40,000 central security personnel have been sent to the state to quell the unrest and restore order.
