Ranchi: The iconic Bada Talab in Ranchi, also known as Swami Vivekananda Sarovar, stands today as a testament to administrative apathy and failed development promises. Despite claims of transforming it into a prime tourist destination, the lake now suffers from neglect, pollution, and public frustration.
₹42 Crore Spent, No Visible Outcome
According to reports, Ranchi Municipal Corporation and the state tourism department have together spent nearly ₹42 crore on the lake’s beautification. This includes ₹19 crore for the grand installation of Swami Vivekananda’s life-size statue in the lake’s center. But the surrounding filth, stagnant water blanketed with green algae, and floating dead fish paint a grim picture, far removed from serenity or aesthetic charm.
Beautification in Name Only
Out of the total funds, ₹14 crore went into the development of pedestrian paths, lighting, and decorative landscaping. An additional ₹8 crore was allocated for the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) to ensure that dirty drain water entering from Upper Bazaar and nearby hospitals was treated before entering the lake. In reality, untreated sewage continues to pour into the lake, worsening the pollution.
The installed STP has failed to function effectively. Waste accumulates near the inlet and eventually flows into the lake untreated. The expensive technology has failed to meet expectations.
Vivekananda Park in Shambles
Once envisioned as a peaceful retreat for locals, the adjoining Vivekananda Park is now in a state of disrepair. Broken swings, scattered tiles, non-functional lighting, and cobweb-covered corners give it the look of an abandoned site. After dusk, the park turns dark and becomes a hangout for anti-social elements.
Local Residents Frustrated
Thousands of residents living within a 2-km radius of the lake have expressed distress over the unbearable stench and filth. Many wear masks to walk past the area. Makeshift tents line parts of the neighborhood, but civic attention remains absent.
Cosmetic Fixes, No Real Solutions
Occasionally, the municipal authorities sprinkle bleaching powder or alum in the lake, but these are stopgap measures. A permanent solution remains elusive, and citizens feel their concerns are being ignored.
Key Question Remains
Where did the ₹42 crore go? How can a historical lake in the heart of Ranchi be so blatantly neglected? The public demands answers. Without accountability and action, Bada Talab risks fading into nothing more than a forgotten tale of failed governance.
