New Delhi, Oct.16: Saravjit Singh, a Sikh ‘warrior’ or Nihang, has claimed “no regrets” for the brutal murder of a Dalit labourer at a farmers protest site in Haryana’s Singhu yesterday.
Following his surrender yesterday, Singh was brought before a local court today and sentenced to seven days in police prison; the authorities had argued for 14 days, claiming that Saravjit had provided them with information on four other suspects and that they needed to retrieve the murder weapons.
A video showed him securely flanked by fellow Nihangs – at least two of whom still had swords – and surrounded by reporters from before his surrender has surfaced, in which one reporter asks: “Do you feel repentance?”
Singh seems uninterested, waves the subject aside, shakes his head, and responds with a flat “No.”
Lakhbir Singh, a 35-year-old Punjabi man from the Tarn Taran district, was discovered dead early yesterday morning. It was discovered with the left hand and right foot hacked off, chained to a police roadblock.
As word of the heinous and terrible murder spread, at least three films emerged, showing a big crowd of Nihangs surrounding his body, which was bleeding and in anguish.
Lakhbir Singh was attacked for allegedly desecrating the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, according to accounts circulating since yesterday morning.
An altercation broke out at the protest site Thursday night over an issue of sacrilege, according to Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav, who is part of the organisation leading the farmers’ rallies.
Lakhbir was allegedly beaten to death, had his limbs severed, and was tied to a police barricade by the Nihangs.
