Patna: Travel between Patna and Hariharganj in Jharkhand’s Palamu district is set to become significantly faster and more convenient, as the Bihar government has pushed forward the process of upgrading National Highway-139 to a four-lane road.

Revised Alignment Sent to Centre

A new revised alignment has been prepared for the approximately 160-kilometre-long route and submitted to the central government. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has responded positively to the proposal, and approval is expected soon.

Two-Lane Road Has Long Caused Congestion

The highway currently runs from Patna through Arwal, Daudnagar, Obra, and Aurangabad before reaching Hariharganj in Jharkhand. Its existing two-lane structure has long been a cause of traffic jams and travel delays for commuters and freight vehicles alike.

Earlier Proposal Had Been Rejected

A previous proposal for this project had failed to receive central approval. The matter was subsequently taken up with Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, following which a fresh alignment was prepared and resubmitted for consideration.

Bypasses Planned for Key Towns

As part of the project, bypasses are also planned for Arwal, Daudnagar, Obra, and Aurangabad to reduce traffic pressure within these towns. Work on planning these bypasses is already progressing.

Jharkhand Stretch Already Four-Lane

Notably, the stretch from Hariharganj toward Jharkhand has already been upgraded to four lanes. Once the remaining portion is widened, travel between Patna and Jharkhand will not only be faster but also considerably safer and more comfortable.
