Ramgarh, May 12: The Gola block of Ramgarh district is known for its high-quality vegetable growing. It is popular not just in Jharkhand, but also in neighbouring states.
But now, farmers in the Gola have begun destroying their ladyfinger crop because they are not receiving a fair price in return.
For the past week, the wholesale price of ladyfinger has been as low as Rs 2 per kg in the daily market. However, the selling price per kilogramme is Rs 5.
Frustrated over getting the price less than the cost, the farmers of Barwatand named Amir Mahto, Durga Charan Mahto, Sandeep Kumar, Pankaj Kumar and many others destroyed their ladyfinger crop in many acres of land
The farmers said that the wholesale traders’ prices were so low that they had no choice except to destroy the harvest.
“With the help of a tractor and rotor, I entirely destroyed the ladyfinger crop in one acre of my land,” claimed farmer Amir Mahato.
When they tried to sell the product in the daily market, the sellers only gave Rs 80 for 40 kg, he said.
He had invested almost Rs 30,000 on a one-acre area to cultivate ladyfinger in the hopes of a good return. However, when he went to sell it in the market, he received a significantly lower price than the cost. The price was so low that it barely covered the expense of transportation.
