Ranchi, Oct 25: On Diwali, Ranchi’s silent zone recorded 69.4 dB between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., exceeding the average allowable limit of 45 dB. Sound pollution increased by 54.22 percent beyond the allowable level, a government official said on Tuesday.
However, the official reported that there was a 6.34 percent rise in noise on Monday when compared to the pre-Diwali level on October 18, one week before the holiday.
A two-hour window, from 8 pm to 10 pm, had been set out by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) for the lighting of firecrackers during Diwali. For six hours starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, the board kept an eye on the amount of noise pollution in four different parts of the city: the Jharkhand High Court (a quiet region), Albert Ekka Chowk (a commercial area), Kutchery Chowk (a commercial area), and Ashok Nagar (a residential area).
According to JSPCB data, the sound pollution levels at Albert Ekka Chowk and Kutchery Chowk were respectively 2.33% and 1.96% higher than pre-Diwali values. According to data, Ashok Nagar saw a 3.06% increase above pre-Diwali levels.
Residential area Ashok Nagar averaged 55.46 dB for the time frame and commercial areas of Albert Ekka Chowk and Kutchery Chowk recorded 75.33 dB and 72.76 dB, respectively. The state capital’s sound pollution has been somewhat reduced by the ban on firecrackers that make noise beyond 125 decibels (dB).
