Kyiv, March 20: The Russian military destroyed an art school in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, where some 400 people had sought refuge, according to the local authorities. The officials also stated that the structure had been damaged and that persons could be found under the rubble. According to the report, there was no immediate word about casualties.
The tragedy occurred just days after Russian soldiers attacked a Mariupol theatre where civilians had sought refuge. Since Wednesday, up to 130 people have been rescued, but many more could still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Mariupol, a vital port on the Azov Sea, has been encircled by Russian soldiers, shut off from energy, food, and water supplies, and subjected to a barrage of artillery fire.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the siege of Mariupol would go down in history for what he called Russian troops’ war crimes.
Notably, on Sunday, Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine entered its 25th day.
