New Delhi, April 13: The Supreme Court will hear Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik’s petition for immediate release from prison in a money laundering case, which has been granted an urgent hearing.
Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, representing for the incarcerated Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader who sought an immediate listing of his case, was directed to furnish papers by a bench chaired by Chief Justice NV Ramana.
The Prevention of Money Laundering Act was enacted in 2005, and the minister has been charged under it for suspected crimes committed before 2000, according to Sibal.
Notably, Malik was detained by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a property deal allegedly involving mobster Dawood Ibrahim’s associates. The minister had filed a plea in the high court shortly after his arrest, appealing his arrest and remand orders.
