Mumbai: In a tragic hit-and-run incident on Sunday, a speeding BMW struck a couple on a two-wheeler in Worli, Mumbai, resulting in the death of the woman and injuries to her husband. The woman was dragged for 100 meters, leading to her fatal injuries.
The incident occurred around 5:30 am near Atria Mall. The couple, residents of the Koliwada area of Worli, were returning home from Sassoon Dock after buying fish. According to Mumbai Police, the speeding BMW hit their two-wheeler from behind, causing the vehicle to overturn and the couple to land on the bonnet of the car.
The husband managed to jump off the moving car, but his wife, Kaveri Nakawa, was unable to do so as she was carrying a heavy load. Nakawa was dragged for 100 meters, resulting in severe injuries. Both were rushed to Nair Hospital, but Nakawa succumbed to her injuries, as reported by NDTV.
The Worli Police have seized the BMW and detained the driver, who had been absconding since the accident. Senior police officials have arrived at the scene, and a case is expected to be registered soon. The car’s owner, identified as Rajesh Shah, a local Shiv Sena (Shinde) leader in Palghar, was allegedly in the vehicle along with his son at the time of the accident.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray visited the Worli Police station and met with Nakawa’s husband. He later posted on social media, emphasizing the need to improve Mumbai’s traffic discipline and safety.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the incident, stating, “The accident is unfortunate and sad. I have spoken to the police, there will be no interference in the case, and strict action will be taken according to the law. The police will not protect anyone. Everyone is the same before the law. Even if he is a Shiv Sena worker, the law will take its own course. Our government’s stand is to give equal justice to all.”
This incident follows another sensational hit-and-run case in Pune, where a 17-year-old under the influence of alcohol struck a motorcycle, killing a young couple. The Pune police are expected to approach the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court’s decision to grant bail to the accused.
