Mumbai: Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has called for Rahul Dravid to be honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his extensive contributions to Indian cricket. Dravid, who recently guided the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team to victory in the T20 World Cup, has been lauded for his achievements as a player, captain, and coach.
Reflecting on the victory, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar noted that “life came full circle” for Dravid as he witnessed India lifting the T20 World Cup trophy in Barbados. This victory came 17 years after India’s disappointing group-stage exit in the ODI World Cup in the West Indies, a period that raised questions about Dravid’s leadership. The recent win not only marked the end of India’s long-standing ICC trophy drought but also symbolized a remarkable redemption for Dravid. Celebrations saw Dravid sharing an emotional moment with Virat Kohli, who called him to lift the trophy.
Amid the nationwide celebrations, with thousands of fans gathering in Mumbai to felicitate the victorious team, Gavaskar emphasized that Dravid deserves the Bharat Ratna for his overall contribution to Indian cricket. In his column in Mid Day, Gavaskar detailed Dravid’s achievements, which span his roles as a player, captain, and coach.
“It would be apt if the Government of India honors him with the Bharat Ratna, for that’s what he has truly been,” Gavaskar wrote. “He has been a great player and captain, leading India to famous away series wins in the West Indies and England. As chairman of the National Cricket Academy and coach of the senior team, he has groomed wonderful talent.”
Gavaskar noted that Sachin Tendulkar is currently the only sportsperson to have received the Bharat Ratna, which he was awarded in 2014 at the age of 40. Gavaskar believes Dravid’s achievements have brought joy across all demographics in India, making him a deserving candidate for the country’s highest accolade.
“Dravid’s achievements have given joy across all party lines and across caste, creed, communities and brought untold happiness to the whole country. Surely, that deserves the highest accolade the country can give,” Gavaskar added. “C’mon everybody, please join me in asking the Government to recognize one of the greatest sons of India. Bharat Ratna, Rahul Sharad Dravid. Sounds terrific, doesn’t it?”
The call for honoring Dravid with the Bharat Ratna has garnered support from cricket fans and pundits alike, recognizing his unwavering dedication and contributions to Indian cricket.
