Chennai: The path to government formation for Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu has hit a fresh hurdle, with acting Governor Rajendra Arlekar turning Vijay away for the second consecutive day, asking him to return with a list of 118 MLAs confirming majority support.
Governor Unsatisfied With Numbers
Vijay had met the acting Governor on Wednesday as well, following which the Governor had called him to verify whether he commanded the numbers needed to form a stable government. However, the Governor remained unconvinced by TVK’s claims and insisted on receiving signatures of 118 MLAs — the majority mark in the 234-seat Tamil Nadu assembly — before proceeding further.
TVK Still Short of Majority
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the assembly elections, winning 108 of 234 seats. With Congress extending its support, five more seats have been added to TVK’s tally, bringing the total to 113. However, this still leaves the party five seats short of the 118 needed to claim a majority and form the government.
Government Formation Remains Uncertain
The back-to-back rejections by the acting Governor have created a significant roadblock for Vijay’s government formation bid. TVK is now engaged in alliance-building efforts to bridge the numerical gap, but no breakthrough has been announced yet.
