“True statesmanship; If something is unpopular, take it back:” Tripura High Court CJ on PM Modi decision on farm laws

The hearing before the Tripura High Court in the case related to communal violence in the State witnessed some interesting remarks today by Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty on the recent decision of the Central government to repeal the contentious Farm Laws.

The Bench which also comprised Justice S Talapatra had assembled some time after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the government has decided to repeal the Farm Laws.

“I am not praising Mr. Modi, but I am just saying this is true statesmanship. If something is unpopular you take it back. Have you ever heard any PM say that he is apologizing? ” Chief Justice Mahanty said, reports Bar and Bench.

He also said that if someone a person in a position of authority should be ready to take both praise and criticism as it is the consequence of holding public office.

“If you are in authority you have to take it both, that is the consequence of holding this chair. We have to be open for criticism and adverse comments. We cannot say that we will not accept criticism, we are holding a public office.”

Earlier this morning, on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, the Prime Minister announced that the Central government has decided to repeal the three controversial farm laws against which farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting for more than a year now.

Prime Minister Modi in his speech said that his government has always worked for the benefit of farmers, particularly small farmers, and will continue the same.

The three laws, Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act 2020, Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act & Amendment to Essential Commodities Act have also been challenged before the Supreme Court.
