Kolkata, June 10: West Bengal’s panchayat election on July 8 was marred by violence on the first day of nomination filing. The state has gotten off to another bumpy start for the rural elections as many candidates were unable to submit their nominations and the BDO office was gheraoed.

In the lead-up to the panchayat election, Congress and its ally CPM attacked TMC workers in Domkal in Murshidabad, escalating the conflict between TMC, CPM and Congress workers there. This occurs the day after 45-year-old Congressman Fulchand Sheikh was fatally shot. Congress claimed that the TMC was responsible for the killing of a member of their party.

On the first day of nominations for the Panchayat elections on July 8, Sheikh was assassinated.

A gun was found on Bashir Mollah, a local TMC leader in Domkal, during the commotion. A firearm was discovered in his hands, and he was then detained and taken to a nearby police station.

As party candidates prepared to file their nominations for the important panchayat elections, Domkal on Friday became a battlefield. The CPM workers alleged that the supporters and workers of the Trinamool Congress gheraoed the Block Development Officer (BDO) office.

Workers for the opposition party also claimed that they were attacked by thugs who were protected by the ruling party. Later, the opposition workers gathered to submit their nominations and chased away TMC workers and supporters in the process. During the violence, which saw the two groups hurl stones at one another, several vehicles also suffered damage.

Fulchand Sheikh was taken to Kandi Hospital where he passed away as a result of his wounds. According to police, the attack also injured another two people. The TMC denied being involved in the incident in any way.

According to the police, the crime is being investigated, and two people are being questioned in relation to it.
