New Delhi: Three people, including a man and two women, died and five women were rescued after a massive fire broke out in the basement of a house in Delhi’s Tughlakabad area late on Thursday night, with the blaze spreading rapidly to parked vehicles and engulfing multiple floors of the building.

Fire Spread From Basement to Multiple Floors

According to the Delhi Fire Service, the fire started in the basement and quickly spread to vehicles parked there before engulfing the ground, first, and second floors of the building. Five women were rescued from the building and admitted to hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

Firefighters Brought Blaze Under Control by 3:30 AM

The Delhi Fire Service received the emergency call around 1 am and rushed firefighting teams to the spot to launch an operation to control the blaze. The fire was eventually brought under control by approximately 3:30 am.

Locals Rescued Trapped Residents Using Sarees

A local resident described chaotic scenes during the incident, recalling that neighbours rushed to help as soon as they noticed the fire. He said vehicles, including seven bikes and a scooter parked on the ground floor, exploded one after another, and residents worked together to extinguish the flames using water. Locals also rescued trapped people from the rear of the building by using sarees to help them climb down and cutting through safety grilles to bring out girls who were trapped inside.

Eight Injured, One Victim Identified as Pankaj

The resident claimed that eight people were injured in the incident and identified one of the deceased as Pankaj, who reportedly lived on the fourth floor of the building. According to the account, the fire broke out around 2 am, with the emergency call made at 2:10 am. Authorities are continuing their response to the incident.
