Patna, Dec 17: A special NIA court on Friday announced life imprisonment to three convicts and 10 years of jail term to five other convicts of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group for planting IEDs at the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya in 2018.

Those who were pronounced guilty on Friday are Paigambar Sheikh, Ahmad Ali, Nur Alam Momin, Adil Sheikh, Dilwar Hossain, Abdul Karim, Mustafizur Rahman and Arif Hussain under sections of the IPC, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substance Act.

Paigambar Sheikh, Ahmad Ali, and Nur Alam Momin have been given life imprisonment by the court.

The special NIA court of ADJ-XV Gurvinder Singh Malhotra has fixed December 17 to pronounce the quantum of sentence.

According to a National Investigation Agency (NIA) official, the case involves the placing of three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in and around the Bodh Gaya temple grounds. The first IED, discovered at Kalchakra Maidan’s gate number 5, exploded as it was being secured, according to the official.

Two more live IEDs were discovered near the Srilankan Monastery and at the Mahabodhi Temple’s gate number 4 stairwell. According to an NIA official, the prisoners plotted to install improvised explosive devices at the temple complex during a visit by the Dalai Lama and the Governor of Bihar.
