New Delhi, Oct 22: A search was under way on Saturday for the missing Army men who were aboard the helicopter that crashed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district, According to a defence spokeswoman.
At 10.43 am on Friday, the advanced light helicopter (ALH), which was carrying five Army personnel, including two pilots, was on a routine mission when it crashed near Migging, about 25 km south of Tuting.
Defence spokeswoman Lt Col A S Walia claimed that the Army and the Air Force were looking for the fifth person’s mortal remains.
According to him, the crash site is very difficult due to its steeply sloping hills and dense vegetation.
Four Army personnel’s bodies were found at the accident site on Friday night, he added. It was located in a heavily forested mountainous terrain some 35 kilometres from the Chinese border. The officer stated that more information is being gathered while the cause of the collision is yet unknown.
According to him, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) had previously received a “May Day” call indicating a mechanical or technical issue.
“This will form the focus of the Court of Inquiry, which has been immediately constituted to investigate the causes of the accident. Names of the personnel will be released after notification to the next of kin,” Lt Col Walia said.
