New Delhi: Residents across Delhi-NCR and parts of western Uttar Pradesh were startled on Saturday after receiving an “Extremely Severe Alert” notification on their mobile phones, accompanied by a loud warning buzzer, as the India Meteorological Department forecast dangerous weather conditions including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, lightning, and hailstorms.
What the Alert Said
The emergency notification warned of a severe thunderstorm with wind speeds of 60 to 80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph, along with lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain and hail likely to affect several districts within three hours. The districts specifically named in the alert included Aligarh, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Mathura, and Meerut.
Cell Broadcast Warning System Triggered
The alert was sent through the government’s cell broadcast warning system, designed to rapidly push emergency weather information to all mobile phones located in potentially affected areas. Many residents took to social media to share screenshots of the alert, with several expressing surprise at the loud alarm tone that accompanied the message.
IMD Issues Safety Advisory
The IMD has forecast continued thunderstorms with lightning, strong winds, and moderate to heavy rainfall across Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during severe weather, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay away from electric poles and waterlogged areas.
