New Delhi, Nov 21: The carbon dating of the ‘Shiva Linga’-like structure found inside the Gyanvapi Mosque premises cannot be conducted due to its potential damage, according to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), but other modern techniques can be adapted to determine the age of the structure.

Manoj Kumar Singh, the ASI’s attorney, further argued that because non-living objects like the structure in question (the purported “Shiva Linga”) lack fossils or carbon, the carbon dating method cannot be utilised to establish their age.

Notably, carbon dating is a commonly used technique for determining the age of organic material, or things that were once living.

In response to these arguments, the Bench of Justice JJ Munir questioned how the counsel for the ASI could claim that carbon dating of the structure is not possible and asked the counsel for the ASI to rule out any chance of damage to the edifice.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, the legal representative for the Hindu worshipers, said that it was crucial to establish the antiquity of the “Shiva Linga” and that ASI should use any appropriate scientific means to do so without endangering the building.
