Tokyo: Typhoon Jongmei has caused widespread destruction across Japan, disrupting normal life in several cities with powerful winds and torrential rainfall, leaving more than 60,000 homes without electricity and prompting mass evacuation advisories across eight prefectures.

Typhoon Moves Towards Greater Tokyo

Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported on Wednesday that the centre of Typhoon Jongmei was located away from the main central island of Honshu, moving north-east towards the Greater Tokyo area with maximum wind speeds of 25 metres per second. The agency noted that certain areas along the Pacific coast are particularly vulnerable to severe natural disasters, making it dangerous for residents to remain in those zones.

Sixth Typhoon of the Season

Japanese government spokesperson Minoru Kihara confirmed at a regular press briefing that Jongmei is the sixth cyclonic storm of this season. Around 60,000 homes had their electricity supply disrupted due to the typhoon. Kihara urged residents to immediately go on alert and take action to protect their lives if they sense any danger.

Millions Advised to Evacuate, 900 Flights Cancelled

Millions of residents across eight prefectures in south-western, central, and eastern Japan were advised to move to safer locations ahead of the storm’s arrival. The typhoon’s impact was also felt in aviation, with around 900 international and domestic flights cancelled on Wednesday morning, severely disrupting travel across the country.
