Daltonganj, Dec 15: An elephant trampled two persons to death in the Hussainabad sub-division on Thursday morning. Both the victims are male.

Conservator of forest Palamu Kumar Ashish said the two casualties occurred in just a gap of around 3 hours.

The first deceased Bansi Mehta (50) was a farmer in Baniyadih. This incident occurred at 5.30 in the morning. He was out for his morning work when the elephant trampled him to death.

In another 3 hours, the elephant killed a local electrician identified as Manoj Ram (35). The deceased belonged to Japla Choubey.

Kumar Ashish said a herd of the elephant has entered this part of the Hussainabad sub-division which has hardly any history of elephant presence.

“We understand the herd of elephants has come from Bihar and is expected to have negotiated the Sone river to reach Hussainabad,” he said.

Sources said there is great anger, shock and panic following the incident. The locale where this herd has been discovered has no forest cover in a radius of 5 km.

“We can’t say right now that the herd will continue to roam around for more hours in the human habitation as herd’s longer roaming or presence in the human habitation area will mean lurking dangers to lives of people,” feared Ashish. “Our ranger and other forest personnel have been asking people to remain alert,” he added.

As per information, about a year a herd which was of Jharkhand was driven away from the Hussainabad sub-division towards the locations of Bihar and it is feared that this herd of elephants might be the same to have come back.
