New Delhi, May 23: Scotland’s first case of monkeypox was verified on Monday, according to Public Health Scotland, who added that the person was being treated and their contacts were being tracked.
“We are working with NHS Boards (National Health Service) and wider partners in Scotland and the UK to investigate the source of this infection. Close contacts of the case are being identified and provided with health information and advice,” said Nick Phin, Public Health Scotland’s Director of Public Health Science.
Notably, the virus that causes monkeypox is more frequent in West and Central Africa. There has been an increase in instances recently, with over 100 illnesses confirmed (or suspected) in Europe and other countries.
On May 20, a top European health expert warned that the rare monkeypox virus could spread faster in the coming months.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also held an emergency meeting on Friday (May 20) to discuss the outbreak of monkeypox. According to a statement made by WHO on May 20, the latest outbreaks recorded in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and numerous European nations are unusual since they are occurring in non-endemic countries.
