Dhanbad, Nov 30: While the admission of 2022-23 academic sessions is still under progress in the medical colleges, the trend shows that Dhanbad’s Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) has emerged as the favourite destination for aspirants after Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi in the state.
After completion of the 1st round of admission, at least 10 students have switched to SNMMCH Dhanbad from other medical colleges in the state.
SNMMCH admission in-charge of Dr Ganesh Kumar said that in the upgraded list, 10 students including one from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur have come for admission.
Ranchi’s Kathy Lakra first took admission at MGMMCH Jamshedpur during the first counselling. During up-gradation (second counselling), she got the opportunity to study at SNMMCH Dhanbad and switched over.
“I and my guardians feel SNMMCH is better than other institutions in the state. So I preferred it,” said Kathy when a senior teacher reportedly asked her for the reason for leaving MGMMCH for SNMMCH.
In Jharkhand, medically qualified aspirants usuallJamshedpurIMS Ranchi followed by MGMMCH Jamshedpur. SNMMCH was the third choice before the functioning of three new medical colleges in 2019.
Switching over by students to SNMMCH Dhanbad keeps significance as it is in the bottom position among the state government-owned five medical colleges. SNMMCH has permission for only 50 MBBS seats while the other four medical colleges in Jamshedpur, Palamu, Hazaribag and Dumka have 100 MBBS seats each.
Due to deficiencies in the faculty and infrastructure, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has pegged 50 MBBS seats at SNMMCH.
SNMMCH principal Dr Jyoti Ranjan Prasad while talking about the switch over by students attributed the quality education, increasing numbers of patients in the hospital, facilities and student-oriented environment as the reasons of attraction among new students to prefer his institution over others.
“Deficiencies of faculty members are in all medical colleges of the state. But it seems students are satisfied with the quality education being provided at SNMMCH even amidst deficiencies. SNMMCH would be the centre of attraction for students once the super speciality hospital begins its operations,” said the principal.
Admission in-charge Dr Ganesh Kumar said that this is not the first time when students have preferred SNMMCH. Last year, a student of the All-India quota (Soumya Shalini) was admitted to Wardha Medical College, Maharashtra but she left that and preferred SNMMCH.
One other student also went to MGMMCH from SNMMCH but later returned after attending classes in Jamshedpur.
