Kolkata: A day after TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked in Sonarpur, Trinamool Congress leader and Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly targeted near Chanditala Police Station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday while on his way to submit a deputation regarding post-poll violence, sustaining a head injury in the incident.
Stone Thrown at Head, MP Found Bleeding on Ground
Banerjee alleged that a group of 10 to 15 BJP supporters in saffron clothing confronted him at Chanditala Crossing, abused him, and threw a stone at his head. Videos from the scene showed him lying on the ground, speaking on a phone while surrounded by people. He was seen holding a cloth to the back of his bleeding head and later stated that he had fallen on the road and was rescued by a CRPF personnel.
Black Flags and ‘Thief’ Slogans Raised Outside Police Station
Tension erupted outside Chanditala Police Station as protesters waved black flags at Banerjee and TMC delegation members, raising “thief, thief” slogans against the Serampore MP. Banerjee alleged the attack took place in full view of the police, accusing Bengal Police of remaining completely silent and failing to intervene.
Kalyan Banerjee Calls It an Attempt to Murder
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee described the incident as an attempt on his life. “A serious condition is prevailing in West Bengal with total lawlessness. This incident was an attempt to murder me,” he alleged, adding that the situation reflected governance by an autocratic chief minister seeking to eliminate all opposing TMC leaders.
TMC Stages Dharna, Mamata Visits Kalyan Banerjee
Following the incident, Banerjee staged a dharna outside Chanditala Police Station, alleging police inaction. TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee visited Kalyan Banerjee at his residence after the attack and accused the BJP of deliberately targeting TMC leaders on consecutive days.
TMC Calls It Pattern of Post-Poll Violence
The Trinamool Congress issued a statement on X saying it had been 26 days since election results were declared, yet post-poll violence continued unabated. The party questioned how protesters were allowed to gather outside a police station and carry out the alleged attack, calling the situation a complete breakdown of democracy.
BJP Denies Allegations
The BJP denied involvement, claiming that local residents were expressing anger against TMC leaders over incidents of post-poll violence in the state. Large police contingents and central forces were deployed in the area to prevent further escalation.
